Words are one of the most instrumental things needed to perform all of one’s tasks efficiently, from conveying messages to succeeding in professional lives. But what if one is judged constantly because of stammering and overshadowing one’s entire personality? Frustrating, right? This is the story of Piyush’s journey, a testament to his unwavering spirit.
Piyush recalls being a fairly obedient child. Growing up with a younger sister, he grew up with a sense of responsibility. He‘s quite a family-oriented person who never misses an opportunity to spend time with them, be it at birthday parties or any special occasion. Apart from being a loving son and a devoted sibling, he is witty, humorous, and utterly dedicated to his work.
In school, Piyush felt that he should refrain from public speaking due to his fear of speaking in front of an audience. There were even times when he would want his chance to be skipped when reading the thoughts of the day or news in the school assemblies. This episode in his life somehow lowered his self-esteem, and he fell into a shell.
Even though the crowd-facing part was bad, Piyush was always among the most consistent students in the school and would rarely miss a class. Growing up, Piyush grew increasingly interested in computers and dreamed of a tech career. When it came time to choose subjects, he was unsure but knew he wanted to be an engineer. However, seeing it as the path to his computer dream, he picked PCM, which initially seemed manageable.
As soon as Piyush entered college, he was fascinated by the fancies of college life. But soon, he realized that college studies mainly focused on the theoretical aspects of RTU exams. Ignoring his career in the initial years made Piyush feel a bit directionless.
This went on till he entered his 3rd year of college, he knew he needed to learn coding and various computing languages, but he was unsure which ones to learn and how to proceed without proper guidance. He only focused on learning one prominent computing language, Python. He was also so convinced that he would get a job related to that only. This was also when he was introduced to the world of Salesforce in his college, but Piyush did not pay much attention to learning it and kept a safe distance from it at that time. However, little did he know that fate had other plans for him, which were yet to unfold when college placement time arrived!
Like every other placement season in college, full of nervous excitement, rush, and lots of aspirations for the future, the college faculty encouraged all the students to give their best shot at the job interviews and sit for every interview. Even though everyone was pepped up, Piyush was a little skeptical when it came to facing the questions in the personal interview round, owing to his fear of getting judged because of the way he communicated.
Despite succeeding in the technical and quantitative ability rounds, Piyush faced multiple rejections when it came to the HR rounds. On the other hand, people in his batch got placed one by one, and his WhatsApp chats were flooded with congratulatory messages, leaving him feeling left out and disheartened.
This series of disappointments could have easily shattered his confidence. But despite the setbacks, Piyush found a ray of hope in securing a job and was not ready to be reduced to mere disappointment. One day, he decided to sit down with pen and paper and compile all the HR round questions he could recall from previous interviews. He did this to prepare his answers more effectively for his following interview.
Around this time, through his college, he learned about Cyntexa; Piyush sat in for an interview at Cyntexa for the developer role. Piyush sat in the interview without any expectations, took a deep breath, and stayed true to himself. Whereas everywhere in his interview journey so far, everyone judged him because of his stammering, he recalls his HR round at Cyntexa as one of the most usual and cordial ones, where he was only being assessed for his skills and not cornered because of the way he expressed himself.
Piyush also said that he was of utmost honesty in his interview round when he was asked whether or not he would be able to cope as a Salesforce Developer. He, with a lot of courage, answered that though he is not very privy to the Salesforce ecosystem, he will do his best to learn about it. This answer somewhere made him believe that he wasn’t going to be shortlisted in the interview. However, one random day, he was scrolling through his phone when he received the offer letter from Cyntexa. This took him by surprise. He was extremely happy; this felt like an achievement for him in every true sense. He immediately went to everyone in his family and told them about this offer letter. His family was pleased and proud of him.
Then began Piyush’s journey at Cyntexa. A new place, new people, and the excitement of the first job. He describes his initial days as a whole new level of learning experience. He was now correctly introduced to Salesforce and its technicalities. He admitted that the training period was a bit challenging for him as all this learning was sometimes overwhelming. There were also times when Piyush wasn’t able to do some assignments on time, but his mentors made sure that with practice, he gradually understood the concept and got things done.
Initially, Piyush had been training for Salesforce Sales Cloud, but after his training period was over, he was asked to switch from Salesforce Sales Cloud to Salesforce Commerce Cloud. This, though, is a gradual progression for all Salesforce developers as they always aspire to get exposure to as many Clouds as they can. However, Piyush found this very challenging; it was a completely new arena for him, and he had just begun developing knowledge about Salesforce Sales Cloud. But taking a leap of faith, Piyush decided to take a chance and started working on the Salesforce Commerce Cloud. Piyush became increasingly involved in learning and practicing the new Cloud technology. To stay connected, he began attending all the webinars organized by Salesforce. As time went on, he found himself becoming increasingly intrigued. Even today, he attends these webinars and encourages his colleagues to attend as well. Piyush’s skills were boosted, prompting him to pursue new Salesforce certifications. As of today, he holds a total of six Salesforce certifications, including B2C Commerce Developer and Java Script Developer-1. Moreover, he aims to attain at least four more in the upcoming months.
Ever since Piyush started working on Salesforce Commerce Cloud, he worked as a shadow developer for the people who interact with clients. Due to his low self-esteem at the time, he worked behind the scenes and also mentored trainees. Without his knowledge, this experience helped him develop essential people skills, which would be beneficial in the future. Piyush’s ambitions wanted him to explore more and work on different projects, as he felt what was following in his life.
Eventually, Piyush got the opportunity to lead his first project. As they say, firsts are always memorable, and so is it. Piyush remembered his first client call experience, where he was highly nervous about facing the client for the first time. When the call was proceeding, he was even asked to repeat a few sentences. He said, “ To be honest, I was a little taken aback when I was asked to repeat the sentences a few times. But somehow, I gathered my courage and then continued the conversation. And eventually, everything went well.” Today, Piyush is leaving no stone unturned to leave scope for complaint as this is his first project.
As time passed, work also became vivid and extensive, and Piyush would have to devote more time to ensuring that things got done. For some time, Piyush felt that things were getting a little overwhelming and exhausting. He would even think that he’s losing his control over an excellent work-life balance. He remembers a funny incident where he and his family went to attend a wedding ceremony, and just when his family proceeded for dinner, he had to take a client call urgently, so he rushed everyone back home!
When asked how he managed to strike a balance between his personal and professional life, he smiled and said, “It was just planning! I made a to-do list and chalked down all the things that were supposed to be done as a priority like I used to do when I was preparing for the interviews. Thus, gradually, things started to look much more streamlined.”
Today, he leads a team, guides, and mentors people around him, and is always the one who encourages. He also looks after the client projects associated with Commerce Cloud.
In addition to work, Piyush loves to travel and spend as much time with his loved ones as possible. When asked what he would like to say to people who are not brave enough to face their insecurities and let that foreshadow their career growth. Piyush said that people who do not face their insecurity are scared and end up missing out on many opportunities. Nothing helps better than facing your fears, and nothing makes you braver than this.
This is Piyush’s story of how he didn’t let his inner insecurity and stammer stop him from making a clear mark for himself in his professional life. His story is truly an example of “where there’s a will, there’s always a way!”
